Expert Metal Roofing Across County Clare

Metal roofing has undergone a quiet revolution in Ireland over the past decade — and nowhere in the country makes more sense for metal roofing than County Clare. A county exposed to some of the most sustained Atlantic weather in Ireland, with a coastline that generates salt air, wind and rainfall at intensities that few other counties experience, Clare is precisely the environment in which metal roofing's core strengths — outstanding weather resistance, exceptional longevity and minimal maintenance — matter most.

At Doherty Roofing, we install and repair metal roofing systems for homeowners and property owners across County Clare. Whether you are building a contemporary new home, replacing an ageing roof on an existing property, roofing an extension or outbuilding, or looking for a durable long-term solution for a garage or agricultural building, Jim and his team will assess your requirements honestly and deliver a quality metal roofing installation built to perform in Clare's demanding climate for decades.

We are fully insured and Safe Pass certified, and we provide free, no-obligation consultations and quotes on all metal roofing work across Clare. There are no call-out fees and no pressure to proceed.

Doherty roofing did excellent work on our house, replacing the old and partially rotting facia and soffit + also our gutters and downpipes. After a few months of waiting for other tradesmen, who never showed up or made us wait weeks for needlessly high quotes, I was especially impressed with Jim's excellent communication, speed and reliability! He always turned up when he said he would, explained everything really well, gave good advice and even fixed a few smaller issues he came across without any extra charge. As we were under some time pressure Jim accommodated us in getting from first contact to all done in less than a month and he and Christian did all the work in the estimated amount of time and left the place tidy at the end. Could not recommend the company more highly! Really good, reasonably priced work and a lovely person do deal with.

I can't recommend Jim and his team enough! After spotting some gutter damage on Tuesday, Jim came out the very same day to inspect it, and the repairs were finished this morning (four days later). With Autumn and Winter approaching, having such a prompt and high-quality job done gives us great peace of mind. The work looks top-notch, and they will 100% be our go-to for any future roof or gutter work.

Very happy with Jim's work today. He came even on bank holiday as he promised. He was very polite and showed me everything that they are doing and what needs to be done. They also noticed two cracked tiles which I didn’t know about and they sealed them for me as he didn’t have replacement ones at the time. Everything was left nice and clean before they left. I wasn’t sure about some stuff so i rang him back and he explained everything to me and was very nice. Very easy to deal with and fast to reply. True gentleman highly recommend the company. Thanks again

We hired Jim and his team to fix a roof leak near the chimney after we noticed a water stain inside the house . They arrived went up onto the roof and located the issue. The work was finished within the time period agreed and at a fair price. They were very professional and cleaned up everything. Highly recommended!"

We recently had a problem with our roof as a leak happened. After searching some companies to check this job we came upon Doherty Roofing and after we contacted him he was there to see the job without hesitation. He is a very polite man and is able to guide you step by step of all the work he will carry out on the job at hand . We had a a few broken ridge caps and needed some lat , felt and tiles changed and the work he carried out looks fantastic, After opening the roof James will even explain to you how all the damage was caused and then he will let you know in detail the work he will do to rectify the problem and how many days approx it would take him to do the job. I would recommend him easily to everyone if they need some work carried out . If we had any more work in the future he would be the first roofer I will contact 👍

Types of Metal Roofing We Install On Homes

Standing Seam Steel Roofing

The most widely specified metal roofing system for modern Irish homes. Steel panels run from ridge to eaves with no exposed fasteners to corrode or fail. Suitable for roof pitches as low as three degrees and available in a wide range of colours. Lifespan: 40–60 years.

Zinc Roofing

The premium metal roofing choice. Zinc develops a natural blue-grey patina that protects the metal and gives it its distinctive appearance. Used extensively on architect-designed homes and heritage properties across Ireland. Lifespan: 60–100+ years.

Corrugated & Profiled Steel

The most cost-effective metal roofing option for garages, outbuildings and agricultural buildings. Modern profiled steel systems are manufactured with high-quality protective coatings and built to perform for decades with minimal maintenance. Lifespan: 30–50 years.

Copper Roofing

The most premium option, with a heritage rooted in Ireland's historic buildings and churches. Copper develops its iconic green verdigris patina over time and requires no ongoing maintenance once correctly installed. Lifespan: 80–100+ years.

Metal Roofing and Planning Permission in Clare

A common question for Clare homeowners considering metal roofing is whether planning permission is required. For most standard re-roofing of existing domestic properties using metal as a like-for-like or equivalent replacement, planning permission is generally not required under standard exempted development provisions.

However, Clare has a significant concentration of protected structures, Architectural Conservation Areas and designated heritage areas — particularly in Ennis town centre, the Burren and along the Shannon corridor — where different considerations may apply. If your property is a protected structure or is located within a designated conservation area, planning permission or conservation officer input may be required before metal roofing work proceeds.

Doherty Roofing will advise on the planning considerations relevant to your specific Clare property and project as part of the free consultation — ensuring you have the information you need before any commitment is made.

Frequently Asked Questions — Metal Roofs

Is metal roofing suitable for a standard Clare home?
Yes. Modern metal roofing systems — particularly standing seam steel and zinc — are fully appropriate for standard domestic residential properties and are increasingly used on new builds and re-roofing projects across Ireland. They are available in a wide range of colours and profiles that suit both contemporary and traditional architectural styles.

Is metal roofing noisy in Clare's heavy rainfall?
This is one of the most common misconceptions about metal roofing. On a properly installed metal roof with adequate insulation and underlayment, rainfall noise is no greater than on a conventional slate or tile roof. The idea that metal roofs are excessively noisy applies to uninsulated agricultural shed roofing — not to modern residential metal roofing correctly installed over a properly prepared substrate.

How does metal roofing perform in Clare's salt air environment?
Quality modern metal roofing systems are specified with coatings and alloys designed to resist corrosion in coastal environments. Steel standing seam systems use high-performance coatings that resist salt air corrosion for decades. Zinc develops a natural protective patina that provides outstanding corrosion resistance throughout its entire lifespan. When specified and installed correctly, metal roofing performs exceptionally well in West Clare's coastal environment.

Can metal roofing be installed on a low-pitched extension in Clare?
Yes — this is one of the significant advantages of standing seam metal roofing over conventional slate and tile. Standing seam systems can be installed at pitches as low as three degrees, making them ideal for lower-pitched extension roofs and contemporary architectural designs where conventional roofing materials are not appropriate.

Does metal roofing require planning permission in Clare?
For most standard domestic re-roofing, planning permission is not required. However, properties in Ennis town centre, the Burren, designated conservation areas and protected structures may have specific requirements. Jim will advise on the relevant planning considerations for your specific Clare property during the free consultation.

Metal Roofing Applications Across Clare

Modern Residential New Builds
Standing seam steel and zinc roofing has become an increasingly popular choice on architect-designed residential new builds across Clare — from contemporary homes in the Ennis area to striking individual builds in rural settings throughout the county. The clean, minimal aesthetic of standing seam metal roofing has become a hallmark of modern Irish residential architecture, and Clare's varied and dramatic landscape provides an exceptional backdrop for properties that make a visual statement with their roofline.

House Extensions
House extensions with flat or low-pitched roof designs are one of the most practical and common applications for metal roofing across Clare. Standing seam steel and zinc systems can be installed at pitches as low as three degrees — significantly lower than the minimum pitch requirements for conventional slate and tile — making them ideal for contemporary extension designs where a low-profile roof is part of the architectural brief. A metal-roofed extension also outperforms conventional flat roof systems in longevity, weather resistance and maintenance requirements.

Garages and Outbuildings
Corrugated and profiled steel roofing is the most practical and cost-effective metal roofing solution for garages, agricultural outbuildings and storage structures across Clare. Modern profiled steel is a world away from the galvanised tin sheeting of previous generations — available in a wide range of colours, manufactured with high-quality protective coatings and designed to perform reliably for decades with minimal maintenance. For the agricultural hinterland around Ennis, the West Clare rural communities and the farming areas throughout the county, corrugated steel is the go-to solution for practical outbuilding roofing.

Heritage and Agricultural Properties
The Burren and North Clare are home to a significant concentration of older stone cottages, converted outbuildings and traditional rural buildings where metal roofing — particularly zinc and copper — is architecturally appropriate and historically referenced. Zinc's natural blue-grey patina and copper's distinctive verdigris finish have been used on heritage buildings throughout Ireland for generations and are entirely appropriate for sensitive rural and heritage contexts.
