Velux is the dominant skylight brand on Tipperary's housing stock — the vast majority of roof windows installed on Tipperary properties from the 1980s onwards are Velux units. Why does my Tipperary skylight seem to leak more in winter than in summer?
Two factors specific to Tipperary's winter conditions contribute to this. First, winter rainfall is typically more wind-driven than summer rainfall — and wind-driven rain is much more effective at exploiting minor flashing and seal failures than vertical rain. Second, the temperature differential between warm internal air and cold winter external temperatures creates condensation on the glass that can be mistaken for a leak. My skylight glass is foggy between the panes — is this fixable?
Not by cleaning — but yes, it is fixable. Persistent fogging between the panes means the sealed unit has failed and moisture has permanently entered the space between the glass layers. The glazing unit needs to be replaced. In most cases the frame can be retained and only the glass unit replaced, making this a relatively straightforward repair. We supply replacement units for all common Velux and Fakro skylight types.
Can a leaking skylight be repaired or does it need to be replaced?
In most cases a leaking skylight can be repaired effectively without full replacement — through flashing work, seal replacement or glazing unit replacement. Full replacement is generally warranted where the frame has deteriorated extensively, where the skylight is very old and multiple elements are failing simultaneously, or where the cost of repair approaches the cost of a new unit.
