Killaloe's Trusted Roofing Contractors

Killaloe is one of the most distinctive and beautiful towns in the Midwest — a heritage town of genuine historical significance set at the southern tip of Lough Derg, where the Shannon narrows into the river below the lake and the bridge between County Clare and County Tipperary has connected two communities for centuries. Together with its twin town of Ballina on the Tipperary bank, Killaloe forms a single cohesive community divided only by a county boundary — and as far as Doherty Roofing is concerned, we serve both sides of that bridge with the same commitment to quality and honest local service.

Killaloe is a town where the quality of the built environment matters. The cathedral, the Romanesque oratory of St Flannan, the historic streetscape and the range of older and period properties that give Killaloe its character sit alongside established residential estates, newer developments and a significant volume of holiday and waterfront properties along the Lough Derg shore. Each of these property types presents its own specific roofing requirements — and all of them deserve a roofer with genuine local knowledge and a commitment to doing the job properly.

At Doherty Roofing, we provide professional roofing services to homeowners and property owners across Killaloe, Ballina and the surrounding East Clare and North Tipperary area. We are fully insured and Safe Pass certified, and we provide free, no-obligation quotes on all roofing work. There are no call-out fees and no pressure to proceed.

Doherty roofing did excellent work on our house, replacing the old and partially rotting facia and soffit + also our gutters and downpipes. After a few months of waiting for other tradesmen, who never showed up or made us wait weeks for needlessly high quotes, I was especially impressed with Jim's excellent communication, speed and reliability! He always turned up when he said he would, explained everything really well, gave good advice and even fixed a few smaller issues he came across without any extra charge. As we were under some time pressure Jim accommodated us in getting from first contact to all done in less than a month and he and Christian did all the work in the estimated amount of time and left the place tidy at the end. Could not recommend the company more highly! Really good, reasonably priced work and a lovely person do deal with.

I can't recommend Jim and his team enough! After spotting some gutter damage on Tuesday, Jim came out the very same day to inspect it, and the repairs were finished this morning (four days later). With Autumn and Winter approaching, having such a prompt and high-quality job done gives us great peace of mind. The work looks top-notch, and they will 100% be our go-to for any future roof or gutter work.

Very happy with Jim's work today. He came even on bank holiday as he promised. He was very polite and showed me everything that they are doing and what needs to be done. They also noticed two cracked tiles which I didn’t know about and they sealed them for me as he didn’t have replacement ones at the time. Everything was left nice and clean before they left. I wasn’t sure about some stuff so i rang him back and he explained everything to me and was very nice. Very easy to deal with and fast to reply. True gentleman highly recommend the company. Thanks again

We hired Jim and his team to fix a roof leak near the chimney after we noticed a water stain inside the house . They arrived went up onto the roof and located the issue. The work was finished within the time period agreed and at a fair price. They were very professional and cleaned up everything. Highly recommended!"

We recently had a problem with our roof as a leak happened. After searching some companies to check this job we came upon Doherty Roofing and after we contacted him he was there to see the job without hesitation. He is a very polite man and is able to guide you step by step of all the work he will carry out on the job at hand . We had a a few broken ridge caps and needed some lat , felt and tiles changed and the work he carried out looks fantastic, After opening the roof James will even explain to you how all the damage was caused and then he will let you know in detail the work he will do to rectify the problem and how many days approx it would take him to do the job. I would recommend him easily to everyone if they need some work carried out . If we had any more work in the future he would be the first roofer I will contact 👍

Why Killaloe Homeowners Choose Doherty Roofing

We Serve Both Killaloe and Ballina

The bridge between Killaloe and Ballina does not divide our coverage area. We serve homeowners on both sides of the Shannon equally — whether your property is in Killaloe town, on the Clare lakeshore, or in Ballina on the Tipperary side of the river.

Genuine Knowledge of Heritage Properties

Killaloe's older and heritage properties require a roofer with genuine experience in natural slate work, traditional mortar techniques and conservation-appropriate materials. Jim has extensive hands-on experience across all the older property types found in and around Killaloe town centre and will advise honestly on conservation considerations where they apply.

Trusted Service for Holiday & Second Properties

If you own a holiday home or second property on the Lough Derg shore, you need a roofing contractor you can trust to assess the situation honestly and carry out work to a high standard without you being on site. Doherty Roofing provides written documentation of all work carried out and communicates clearly throughout every project — giving absent property owners complete confidence in the work being done.

Frequently Asked Roofing Questions

Yes. We serve both Killaloe on the Clare side and Ballina on the Tipperary side of the Shannon with equal coverage and the same quality of service. The county boundary at the bridge makes no difference to our coverage area — if your property is in the Killaloe-Ballina area on either side of the river, Doherty Roofing can help.

Yes. We carry out roofing work on all property types found across Killaloe including older period properties with natural slate roofs, stone chimney stacks and traditional roofing details. We source matching materials and carry out all work with the care and expertise that older buildings deserve. For properties within Killaloe's Architectural Conservation Area or adjacent to protected structures, we will advise on any relevant planning or conservation considerations as part of the free consultation.

Yes. We regularly carry out roofing work for absent property owners on holiday and second properties along the Lough Derg shore. We provide a full written assessment of the work required before proceeding, carry out all work to the same high standard regardless of whether the owner is present, and provide full written documentation and photographic records of the completed work on request.

The combination of elevated moisture from the lake surface, the higher-than-average rainfall in the Lough Derg basin and the shade created by the surrounding wooded hillsides creates conditions that are exceptionally conducive to moss and algae growth on roof surfaces. Properties along the lakeshore north of Killaloe are particularly affected. We carry out professional softwash roof cleaning across the Killaloe area that kills moss at the root and inhibits regrowth — contact us for a free roof assessment.

Killaloe is approximately 20 kilometres from Limerick city and very well within our regular working area. We respond quickly to all calls from Killaloe and Ballina and will always give you an honest estimated arrival time when you call. For genuine roofing emergencies call Jim directly for the fastest response.

Yes. Doherty Roofing is fully insured with public liability cover and our team are Safe Pass certified. We are happy to confirm our insurance details on request.

Roofing in Killaloe — Why This Location Creates Unique Challenges

Killaloe's setting on the southern shore of Lough Derg is one of the most beautiful in Ireland — but it also creates a specific and demanding roofing environment that is unlike anywhere else in County Clare.

Lough Derg Moisture Exposure
Lough Derg is one of the largest lakes in Ireland — a vast body of water that generates its own microclimate along its shores. Properties in and around Killaloe, particularly those closest to the waterfront and along the lakeshore roads north of the town, are exposed to elevated levels of airborne moisture from the lake surface year-round. This persistent moisture accelerates moss and algae growth on roof surfaces, causes faster deterioration of mortar on ridge tiles and chimney stacks, and creates conditions in which any weakness in the roof covering or its waterproofing details is exploited more rapidly than on equivalent properties set back from the water.

Wind Funnelling on the Shannon Corridor
At the southern tip of Lough Derg, the Shannon narrows and the lake's open water transitions into a river corridor flanked by rising ground on both the Clare and Tipperary banks. This topography creates a wind funnelling effect — winds that have crossed the open lake surface arrive at Killaloe with real directional force, channelled and concentrated by the narrowing water corridor. Properties along the bridge and on the lower streets of both Killaloe and Ballina experience this wind pressure directly, and it takes its toll on ridge mortar, flashings and any roofing elements that are not properly bedded and sealed.

Elevated Rainfall
The East Clare and North Tipperary lakeside area consistently records above-average rainfall — the Lough Derg basin acts as a moisture trap for the prevailing south-westerly weather systems, and properties in the Killaloe area see more rainfall than many other parts of the Midwest. The practical consequence for roofs in the area is accelerated deterioration of all organic growth-related damage — moss, algae and lichen establish and spread rapidly on roof surfaces in this environment.
