The Only Slate Roofing Experts You Need

Slate is one of the oldest and most respected roofing materials in the world — and nowhere is that more evident than in Limerick, where natural slate roofs have been protecting homes for well over a century. From the terraced streets of the city centre and the established suburbs of Dooradoyle and Castletroy, to older rural properties throughout County Limerick and the surrounding counties, slate roofs are a defining feature of the local built environment.

When a slate roof is in good condition, it is virtually unmatched as a roofing material. It is durable, weather-resistant, naturally beautiful and, when properly maintained, capable of lasting well over a hundred years. But when it begins to fail — through nail corrosion, frost damage, storm displacement or simple age-related wear — it needs to be repaired by someone who genuinely understands the material and the specific demands of the Irish climate.

At Doherty Roofing, slate roof repairs are a core part of what we do. Jim and his team carry out professional slate roof repairs and re-slating work across Limerick, Clare and Tipperary, using quality matching materials and proven techniques that restore your roof's integrity without compromising its character or appearance. We are fully insured and Safe Pass certified, and we provide free, no-obligation quotes on all slate roof work.

I can't recommend Jim and his team enough! After spotting some gutter damage on Tuesday, Jim came out the very same day to inspect it, and the repairs were finished this morning (four days later). With Autumn and Winter approaching, having such a prompt and high-quality job done gives us great peace of mind. The work looks top-notch, and they will 100% be our go-to for any future roof or gutter work.

Very happy with Jim's work today. He came even on bank holiday as he promised. He was very polite and showed me everything that they are doing and what needs to be done. They also noticed two cracked tiles which I didn’t know about and they sealed them for me as he didn’t have replacement ones at the time. Everything was left nice and clean before they left. I wasn’t sure about some stuff so i rang him back and he explained everything to me and was very nice. Very easy to deal with and fast to reply. True gentleman highly recommend the company. Thanks again

We hired Jim and his team to fix a roof leak near the chimney after we noticed a water stain inside the house . They arrived went up onto the roof and located the issue. The work was finished within the time period agreed and at a fair price. They were very professional and cleaned up everything. Highly recommended!"

We recently had a problem with our roof as a leak happened. After searching some companies to check this job we came upon Doherty Roofing and after we contacted him he was there to see the job without hesitation. He is a very polite man and is able to guide you step by step of all the work he will carry out on the job at hand . We had a a few broken ridge caps and needed some lat , felt and tiles changed and the work he carried out looks fantastic, After opening the roof James will even explain to you how all the damage was caused and then he will let you know in detail the work he will do to rectify the problem and how many days approx it would take him to do the job. I would recommend him easily to everyone if they need some work carried out . If we had any more work in the future he would be the first roofer I will contact 👍

I had my gutters cleaned and repaired by Doherty Roofing today and I couldn’t be happier with the service. They arrived on time, were professional, and explained exactly what needed to be fixed before starting. They cleaned out all the debris, repaired the problem areas, and made sure everything was flowing properly before they left.

Can’t recommend enough, very professional and accommodating. Great job on replacing my old timber faciaing and gutter's, not an easy job as the house is 120 years old and no straight lines. Even cleaned up and took away all the old stuff which is fantastic. 5 stars all the way

Why Slate Roofs Fail — And Why Limerick's Climate Makes It Worse

Nail Corrosion

The most common cause of slate roof failure on older properties is not the slates themselves — it is the nails that hold them in place. Traditional iron or steel nails corrode over time, and as they do, their grip on the slate weakens. Slates begin to slip, slide or fall entirely, and once this process begins in one area of a roof it tends to spread. On a roof where widespread nail failure has occurred, the entire slate covering may need to be stripped, the battens assessed and replaced where necessary, and the roof re-slated using modern copper or stainless steel fixings that will not corrode.

Natural Weathering & Age

Even the best quality natural slate has a finite lifespan. On roofs that are sixty, eighty or a hundred years old, natural weathering will have taken its toll. Slates become thinner and more brittle over time, losing their ability to resist impact and moisture penetration. The mortar bedding on ridges and hips hardens and cracks. Lead flashings corrode and pull away from the masonry. On older roofs, a comprehensive inspection is essential to understand the true condition of the covering and advise on the most appropriate course of action.

Frequently Asked Questions — Slate Roofs

The key factors are the age of the roof, the extent of the deterioration and whether problems are localised or widespread. If only a small number of slates are damaged and the rest of the covering is in sound condition, a targeted repair is usually the right approach. If the roof is old, nail failure is occurring across multiple areas, and the underlay has failed, a full re-slating is often the more cost-effective long-term decision. Jim will inspect your roof and give you an honest recommendation based on what he finds — not on what generates the most work.

Yes. In most cases, individual slates or small groups of slates can be replaced without affecting the surrounding covering. This is a straightforward repair when carried out by an experienced roofer and is significantly more cost-effective than unnecessary large-scale work.

We assess the existing slate covering carefully to identify the material, size, colour and texture of the slates in place. We then source replacement slates from our suppliers that match as closely as possible. On older roofs with Welsh or Irish slate, a perfect match may not always be achievable with new materials — in these cases we will discuss your options honestly, including the possibility of using reclaimed slates where an exact match is important.

The cost depends on the number of slates to be replaced, the extent of any additional repair work required, the type of slate involved and the accessibility of your roof. Individual slate replacements are relatively minor jobs, while a full re-slating is a more substantial investment. Doherty Roofing provides free, detailed quotes so you will always know the full cost before any work begins.

Natural slate is a quarried stone product formed over millions of years. It is heavier, more expensive and, at the top end of the market, exceptionally durable — capable of lasting a century or more. Fibre cement slate is a manufactured product designed to replicate the appearance of natural slate. It is lighter, more affordable and available in consistent sizes, making it a practical choice for new builds and re-roofing projects. Both materials have their place, and the right choice depends on your property, your budget and your long-term priorities.

Should You Repair or Re-Slate? An Honest Guide

One of the most important questions any homeowner with a deteriorating slate roof faces is whether to repair the existing covering or commit to a full re-slating. It is a significant decision, and it deserves an honest answer rather than a recommendation based on what generates the most revenue for the contractor.

Here is how we approach that decision at Doherty Roofing:

Repair is usually the right answer when: the roof is relatively young, the damage is localised to a specific area or a small number of slates, the overall covering is still in sound condition, and the underlying structure, battens and underlay are performing well.

Re-slating is usually the right answer when: the roof is old and showing widespread deterioration, nail failure is present across multiple sections rather than in one isolated area, the underlay has failed and is no longer providing a secondary line of defence, or the cost of ongoing piecemeal repairs is approaching or exceeding the cost of a full replacement.

If a repair will serve you well for another ten to fifteen years, that is what he will recommend. If the roof has reached the point where re-slating is the more cost-effective long-term decision, he will tell you that clearly and explain why — so you can make an informed choice rather than simply following the contractor's recommendation.
